If your teammate has both thumbs up, then she would like you to serve the ball up the middle. The same rule applies for the left thumb. If your teammate has her right thumb up, then she would like for you to serve the ball to the right side of the court. Thumbs play an important role in communicating to the server where the ball should go. Be prepared to either receive or pass, set, dig or hit the ball to your teammate to keep the ball in play. To help your teammate out, drop over to his opposite side and play defense. This move could be used to set up a play such as a dink, spike or kill. When a teammate shows a closed fist, it means he plans on dropping away from the net in order to prepare for the return hit. Specifically, volleyball hand signals let the setter know the planned action of her teammates after the ball is served. Players in other sports, such as volleyball, use hand signals to communicate the same thing. Violations include a serving violation, which indicates the ball was not served within eight seconds of blowing the whistle, a net violation means that the net was touched, an attack violation is related to hitting the ball from an illegal position and a blocking violation is related to blocking the ball even before it has crossed the net into the player's own court. The rules in some sports, such as football, allow players to occasionally huddle together to come up with the next offensive play or defensive strategy. Violations may occur in which the referee will need to call. Other terms include a spike, which is powering the ball over the net by hitting it hard, a dig is returning the spiked ball and a tool is spiking the ball off the opponent’s block. A set means placing the ball near the net for spiking purpose. A tip is placing a soft shot above the opponents block, a block occurs when the player blocks a spiked ball resulting in the ball returning to the spiker's court and a free ball is a ball that is returned by passing. These basic volleyball terms include an ace, which is a serve that makes a direct point and a kill occurs when an attack results in immediate point. Player, coaches and referees should know certain volleyball terms. This can be shown by placing a hand over the net, ensuring that the palm is facing down. A net violation is meant to show that there was a contact with the net. Begin service is meant to indicate that the server is now allowed to serve, which can be shown by holding the hand high in the air with the palm in the direction of the team serving the ball. A double hit is indicated by two fingers showing that the player contacted the ball twice. A carry is when the ball had too much contact time with the players hand and is indicated by holding hand horizontal with the palm facing upwards. If a ball is out of bounds or went outside the antenna, the referee will raise his forearms vertically and palm facing inwards. Ball in bounds is meant to show the point of the court where the ball landed and is indicated by pointing one arm and hand toward the floor. A point is indicated by one finger at the side of the court to indicate the winner of the rally. The hand signals are given by the referee who first signals the fault and then indicates which team has won the point. The referee blows the whistle to signal the start and end of each play. Referees use several hand signals during a volleyball game. The second referee, or R2, is responsible for keeping track of time, administrating the substitutes and communicating with the coaches or teams effectively as well as assisting the first official. The first official gives the signal to start the game by whistling and has the authority to overrule any other official’s decision. The first referee, or R1, stands at the referee stand. Two official referees are in any volleyball game. Referees are the officials who are responsible for ensuring that all rules of the games are followed.

Here’s some of the most common templates for planning projects and scheduling team members with Excel. So if you’ve spent your whole life making a project schedule on a spreadsheet, why change now?
New ones pop up all the time trying to be the best, but knowing how to set up your own columns and margins creates this effect just the same. Some of the more popular ones for use are the Bootstrap grid and 960 Grid. Web designers use column grids all the time to align content. This helps divide your content without the need for placing a divider between them. You can also host different kinds of content divided by columns (like using the left most columns to hold images, and the right columns to host text.)Ĭolumns can be further segmented by placing small gaps between them called “gutters.” These gutters are full of whitespace that, again, creates breathing room for your content. By diving things this way, you help people understand what content they should be paying attention to. As the content becomes more complex, a multi column grid may become necessary to deliver content in a more flexible format.Ĭontent can stretch multiple columns, creating its own hierarchy to supply main content and supplementary content. A single column works for simple documents and for delivering one consistent run of information. They can group ideas together, they can break them apart, and they can balance out a document all using the content on the canvas. (both) Columns & GuttersĬolumns are a great way to segment content visually. 5” (print) horizontal margins, or a 3% - 10% (web) margin on either side and variably a 5% - 15% margin on top and bottom. Very subjectively, if you are looking for a general amount of margin that feels good, have between. Typesetters would love this section because designing book layouts is something quite difficult and left to the detail oriented. Where print is a rigid size you can determine, most of the time digital designs are for sizes that are fluid and always changing, and so must your margins for your content. The proper proportions only echo that which medium you are designing for. To effectively choose what type of margin you are going to use, you need to know what content you are provided with and where that content will live. Print designers use margins as safe zones and web designers use them to anchor content properly on screen. Margins are usually specific to the type of device or print work you are doing. Your content can be just as claustrophobic as you are, so making sure there’s enough of a space between the edges of your medium and the content you’re filling it with is crucial. They create an invisible frame around your content and allow visual breathing room. Margins are important to all of your designs. We’re here to solidify our understanding of grid systems in design so we can be one step closer to breaking the grid with purpose. Things that work for those with experience and a purpose don’t always work when you try to imitate it. It’s such a dangerous trend to follow if you don’t have a purpose for it. A good example of this is Jon Moore’s Off Center Alignment post. An excellent designer knows when and where you can break the grid to create something truly unique. However if you have been teaching yourself, you might realize this can be a very difficult thing to learn.Ī good designer knows how to use a grid to guide users through content. Rhythm: Proportion systems that can help define the sizing frequency and spacing of each of the above elements. If you went to design school, you may have been exposed to (or overexposed to) some of these components during typography or a layout and composition class. Hang-line: A horizontal guide to align content to hang off ofīaseline: The horizontal guide for an element to sit on top of Margins: The area surrounding your content Guides: The edge which you choose to align content with They are a product of using a few types of components. They take the content that you are designing for and helps you arrange things in logical order and logical divisions. To use them, you have to have a good understanding of lines and shapes and their usage in design (we’ll go over this in depth during the Designing with Confidence course). Grids are one of the best systems you can use to guide people through content. Our autopsy today is on Grid systems and the many parts inside. Today, we’ll pull apart those systems to look at the components inside. Yesterday, we pulled aside a few systems in design and took a microscopic look into part of the design process. The 2018 wildfire season went on to also break records as the deadliest and most destructive season on record in California. The 2017 wildfire season was well above average, with deadly fires in California and throughout the West, including Montana, Oregon, and Washington state. Since 2000, 15 forest fires in the United States have caused at least $1 billion in damages each, mainly from the loss of homes and infrastructure, along with firefighting costs. Changes in climate add to these factors and are expected to continue to increase the area affected by wildfires in the United States. Land use and forest management also affect wildfire risk. Warmer, drier conditions also contribute to the spread of the mountain pine beetle and other insects that can weaken or kill trees, building up the fuels in a forest. wildfires are caused by people-warmer temperatures and drier conditions can help fires spread and make them harder to put out. Once a fire starts-more than 80 percent of U.S. In the Southeastern United States modeling suggests increased fire risk and a longer fire season, with at least a 30 percent increase from 2011 in the area burned by lightning-ignited wildfire by 2060. West, projections show that an average annual 1 degree C temperature increase would increase the median burned area per year as much as 600 percent in some types of forests. Increased drought, and a longer fire season are boosting these increases in wildfire risk. Research shows that changes in climate create warmer, drier conditions. Climate change enhances the drying of organic matter in forests (the material that burns and spreads wildfire), and has doubled the number of large fires between 19 in the western United States. All these factors have strong direct or indirect ties to climate variability and climate change. Wildfire risk depends on a number of factors, including temperature, soil moisture, and the presence of trees, shrubs, and other potential fuel. But it appears just eight months later, the Mendocino Complex fire has surpassed it.īelow is an interactive map of all the major wildfires in California.Climate change has been a key factor in increasing the risk and extent of wildfires in the Western United States. December 2017’s Thomas fire in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties became the state’s largest-ever fire. Those fires began in October, a month that is typically considered the most dangerous for fast-moving, aggressive wildfires. In 2017, California had its most destructive fire season yet, with an intense series of Northern California fires that scorched more than 245,00 acres and killed 44 people. In recent years, the season has grown longer and more intense – prompting some officials to declare that fire season is now year-round. This is only the beginning for California’s fire season. And many are burning in areas experiencing record-shattering extreme heat. Some of California’s wildfires are burning in mountainous areas, making it even more difficult for firefighters to contain them. Together, these fires - along with the growing Holy Fire in Orange County and a number of other infernos across the state - have destroyed more than 1,000 homes and structures, and have taken at least nine lives. Two firefighters have also died while working on the fire. That 94,331-acre flame is now in its 26th day and promoted Yosemite National Park officials to close the popular Yosemite Valley for the first time in 20 years - during peak tourism season. Down in Mariposa County near Yosemite National Park, thousands of firefighters are still battling the stubborn Ferguson fire. Sparked by a vehicle failure nearby, the fire has destroyed more than 1,000 homes and taken the lives of at least seven people. More than 160 miles north, the Carr Fire in Redding has burned through 164,413 acres and is 47% contained, as of Tuesday morning. It has now burned 290,692 acres and is just 34% contained, according to California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). By Monday, the Mendocino Complex fire burning just north of wine country in Northern California became the states largest-ever fire. Thousands of firefighters are currently battling the flames of 14 active fires, which are threatening communities from Redding in Northern California to Orange County in Southern California. Fast-moving and aggressive wildfires are scorching California – killing at least nine people and destroying more than 1,000 homes and businesses. When I open the screen for my embroidery designs, I call up the designs I want to use from the built in quilting patterns and then go into the edit mode. All I need to do is edit them to the size hoop I want to use. There are so many lovely already digitized quilt designs built into the machine. I use my embroidery hoop to create a lot of my quilting designs. If you want to be really technical, you could use graph paper and recreate your block and the placement of your text, but I’m a huge fan of eyeballing it.One of the features I really like is the editing feature built into my Janome MC15000 machine. Sketch out your idea on a sheet of paper.I find that this method is more useful for larger letters, images, or phrases. I ’ m going to embroider directly onto my quilt, but follow these same directions if you ’ re going to use a separate piece of fabric and simple sew the fabric piece onto your quilt top or back however you like. *For the sake of this tutorial, we will embroider “ 2023” onto my newest quilt that just happens to be my newest pattern (coming soon!). A quilt (or piece of fabric to embroider on that you’ll then sew onto your quilt*).Wonderfil Perle Cotton #8 embroidery thread (you can play around with weight as you figure out what you like to use) in a coordinating color.Scrap paper (for practicing your design).Without further ado, let’s add a date to my newest quilt! I sometimes decide to embroider on a separate piece of fabric and sew it onto the quilt because I’m going to be in the car for a trip and I want something smaller to be working on without holding an entire quilt top, but this is completely personal preference! Either way, it’s very handy to have an embroidery hoop to make your fabric taut and easier to work with. Decide whether you ’ d like to quilt directly on the quilt top or backing itself (definitely best for small, decorative stitches) or if you want to embroider your words or image on another piece of fabric that you can then sew onto your quilt. Don’t baste your quilt quite yet! You’ll need access to your needle and thread in order to tie it off at various points as you go, and that would be impossible to do if the quilt was already basted. With that in mind, you ’ ll be completing the embroidery step before finishing your quilt. While hand quilting actually goes through all the layers of the quilt (quilt top, batting, and backing), this technique is simply adding a decorative element to your quilt top or backing, so you’re only going through one layer. This was the longest bit of personalization I have done to date! The end result was very much worth the time it took to complete.Ī couple of things to consider before you start making your quilt extra personalized with some embroidery: My daughter’s wonderful preschool teacher moved back to Northern Ireland and so I put a blessing on her quilt to send her on her way. After reading through this post, you’ll have ideas that will inspire you to add something special to your next project that will make it stand apart and have an extra special touch. I want to show you a few things I’ve tried, from simple to more complex, and then I’ll provide a tutorial for adding a date to a quilt top to get you started. You might want to add a baby’s initials to a quilt, or a wedding date maybe you’re feeling ambitious and want to add a song lyric along the bottom of the backing. I recently completed a bigger project (a blessing on a going away quilt for my daughter’s teacher),so I decided I needed a break on my next quilt and simply added an initial and some decorative stitching and embroidery to the quilt top. I absolutely love this technique for making an already personalized craft that much more personal!Īpplying embroidery can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. There are some basic combinations you need to remember to control the protagonist. The gameplay of Kindergarten is about observation and dialogs much more than about managing controls.
